To help us provide a premier banking experience to our customers, we’re seeking a Mortgage/Retail Underwriter to join our mortgage operations team at our Verona Office! This position is responsible for underwriting all first mortgage, secondary market and in- house loans with knowledge of FHLB, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, WHEDA, and mortgage insurance underwriting and compliance guidelines and SBCP loan policy.  This position is also responsible for underwriting all retail loans according to SBCP loan policy.  The Mortgage/Retail Underwriter is responsible for assuring loan policies and procedures are adhered to throughout the loan process.


Mortgage Underwriting

  • Underwrite all first mortgage applications for accuracy, compliance, SBCP loan policy, secondary market guidelines and product guidelines
  • Receive, review and communicate underwriting guideline changes to staff
  • Assist loan officers and processors with underwriting questions


Retail Underwriting

  • Verify appropriate application documents are properly executed for new loans
  • Provide accurate financial analysis
  • Confirm lending guidelines are met for loan request approval
  • Prepare all disclosures for second mortgage loans
  • Order and review appraisal or evaluations when guidelines require
  • Order and review title work and flood determinations
  • Review and process maturing loans
  • Maintain and provide Retail Loan Rate Sheet
  • Present educational, procedural and compliance materials to staff


Compliance Monitoring

  • Responsible to assure timely decisions are made in accordance with Regulation B
  • Perform secondary review of denials
  • Prepare and provide adverse action notices when applicable
  • Ensures accurate HMDA reporting



Ideal candidates will possess:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business and/or similar field of education and/or 2-5 years of previous work experience in mortgage/retail/consumer underwriting or processing
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.  Previous work experience in retail or mortgage underwriting preferred.   
  • Working knowledge of underwriting requirements for secondary market investors, private mortgage insurance, and internal loan policy
  • Comprehension of loan documents and required disclosures and all compliance regulations involving Truth-In-Lending, RESPA, etc.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite with the ability and willingness to learn new programs and software.
  • Familiarity with mortgage/retail origination software and automated underwriting systems.  This may be accomplished through on the job training.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills to be able to interact and communicate with a diverse group of individuals
  • Excellent organizational skills, including ability to prioritize and remain calm while working in a fast-paced/deadline driven environment
  • Demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands to meet deadlines while remaining calm under pressure
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent follow up skills and the ability to proof own work as well as others
  • Willing team player with the ability to put forth the extra effort necessary to make the office a successful operation including the willingness to put in extra time when needed and/or to attend required & recommended outside educational programs, seminars, etc.
  • Ability to maintain confidential customer information
